To help spread the word, Blizzard and MSF are inviting WoW streamers and content creators to rally their own communities to the cause by streaming on Twitch and creating their own fundraising page. In addition, if a goal of $1 million (USD) is reached, everyone will receive a second pet, Daisy the sloth-an all-new companion that players can carry with them everywhere they go, right on their characters’ backs. Once a goal of $500,000 (USD) has been reached, Blizzard will make Bananas, a cute baby gorilla, available for everyone playing modern World of Warcraft as a thank-you, whether or not they were able to donate. Together they’ve raised more than $16 million for various charitable organizations and efforts around the world and have adopted a menagerie of adorable in-game critters like the feisty Cinder Kitten or Dottie, the curious baby alpaca, along the way. Since Blizzard Entertainment debuted its first WoW charity pet in 2009 (a scrappy companion known as the Pandaren Monk), the game’s global community has earned a reputation for its incredible generosity and readiness to join forces for a good cause. The Charity Pet program is one of several initiatives, including the Call of Duty Endowment United Pack and King’s support of animal rescue charity Battersea, championed by Activision Blizzard that leverage its player community to support global fundraising initiatives. Last Thursday, the World of Warcraft (WoW) community set out on an epic and worthy new quest: make a difference in the global response to COVID-19 through the latest World of Warcraft Charity Pet program, with donations directly supporting the medical humanitarian aid organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
